Cusco, Peru

Population: 428,000
Elevation: 3,399 meters

This Peruvian city in the Andes mountain range was once the capital of the Inca Empire. Today, it is a top tourist destination for travelers exploring the country of Peru. Cusco offers plenty of activities for all ages and adventure types. In fact, there are so many options that Cusco is a great place to base yourself for your travel within Peru. It is the take off point to begin the infamous Inca Trail hike to Machu Picchu, to visit the Sacred Valley, and enjoy a variety of day trips to places like Rainbow Mountain, Lake Titicaca and the desert oasis, Huacachina.

There is plenty to do right within the city itself. There are 12 beautifully constructed churches to visit, colonial buildings to marvel at, and plenty of Peruvian restaurants offering local dishes to try such as cuoy (guinea pig), alpaca and trout.

We spent a week in Cusco and absolutely loved every second. Cusco was the starting point of hiking the Inca Trail for us (another blog to come on that soon). We decided to arrive early to get acclimated to the altitude and explore this lively, ancient city.

We took our time in Cusco enjoying the history and the beauty. We walked all over the historic center, visiting the local churches and markets as well as the local cafes. Our favorite experience of our entire time in Cusco was a day trip we took through the Sacred Valley with Alpaca Expeditions. They truly are the best travel agency in town and their staff is extraordinary in making your experience special and memorable to each traveler.

We were picked up early in the morning at our hotel and spent the day exploring the best of the Sacred Valley.

We stopped at a local alpaca farm where we got to interact with some llamas and alpacas.

We visited the Pisaq ruins and markets

We explored the Ollantaytambo fortress

and we enjoyed a traditional Peruvian lunch of alpaca and trout.

The Sacred Valley day tour is a must if you’re visiting Cusco. The guides have a wealth of knowledge on the history of this extraordinary region and make the day one to remember.
